Screening of Segregating Population for Bacterial Blight Resistance of Rice Caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae

Abstract

The bacterial blight of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) (Ishiyama, 1922) is an economically important and is one of the most destructive disease of rice in both irrigated and rainfed environmentsin Asia. The disease can cause 30 to 50 percent yield loss. Host Plant resistance is an important component of an integrated management program for this disease. So, in this investigation effort has beenmadeto screenthe advancedbreeding lines possessing broad spectrum durable resistance by transferring bacterial blight resistant genes viz., xa5, xa13 and Xa21 from IRBB59. A popular high yielding variety of Chhattisgarh Karma Mahsuri, susceptible to bacterial blight and IRBB59 carrying resistant genes for bacterial blight (xa5, xa13 & Xa21 genes) was selected as the parent for crossing. Twenty eight segregating lines having twelve plants in each line along with parents Karma Mahsuri and IRBB59 were screened under artificial condition. Total three hundred thirty six plants were screened where; 184 plants were resistant, 78 plants were moderately resistant, 61 plants were susceptible and 13 plants were highly susceptible.
