Abstract

The present paper aims to study the Birhor tribe, which is a very vulnerable, minor and backward tribe a Chhattisgarh state. In the present study an attempt has been made to study the socio-culutural aspects of the tribe in context of modern education. How does education fulfill the needs according to the norms of their society? The main objective of the study is to bring them into the main stream by identifying their indepth cultural barriers and an effort has been made to remove the barrier that has proved to be hinderance for their education. The dropout rates has been observed to be 63.11% in primary level, 51.52% in the age group of 19–29 years. The drop-out rates was highest (54.05%) among females in the age group of 9–19 years. The highest percentage of drop outs was due to lack of interest in studying. Therefore, it is necessary that there should be a change in their moral behavior so that, there is a progress in educational status which will lead to reduction in drop out rates.
