Intergenerational Educational Mobility: A Comparative Analysis between Reserved and Unreserved Categories Population of Harirampur Block of Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal, India

Abstract

This article attempt to study the gender disparity in literacy among the reserved and unreserved categories population and comparative analysis on intergenerational educational mobility between reserved (SC and ST have been taken) and unreserved (other than SC and ST) categories of Harirampur Block of Dakshin Dinajpur district. Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Classes have been identified as the reserved category by the Indian Constitution. Though their educational status has been developed since last three decades with the help of governmental schemes, policies, and reservation facilities, still they are backward compared to unreserved category population. In Dakshin Dinajpur, district literacy rate of total population is 72.82% where male and female literacy rate is 78.37% and 67.08%, respectively, as per 2011 census. There is a wide difference in literacy between reserved and unreserved category that is, 62.94% and 80.88%, respectively, (as per 2011 census). Sopher's Disparity Index and Educational Mobility Matrix table have been employed in this study. Cartographic techniques such as maps and diagrams have been applied for the depiction of result with the help of GIS-Arc Software.
