Abstract

India is a country with agrarian cum pastoralist mode of economy. Many people also perused their income for livelihood from forest and near by ecosystem. It is well known that many traditional communities who have mostly depended on natural ecosystem with minimum contact from the outside world having a good socio-economic condition. In recent years many communities were evicted from forest areas in the wake of execution of government's policies for protection of forest and wild life, losing their tradition and struggling for livelihood in the new settlement. Such an example is that of Gujjars in Rajasthan, who were living in and around the Ranthambore National Park since historical past and were reportedly, persuaded to migrate from the core areas of the forest with the view to settle them far away from forest areas. Such a change of habitation was soon followed by imposition of restriction to utilise forest produceand this combination compelled this community to shift their livelihood option from solely pastoralist mode to settle down for the agriculturist mode which hammers their socio-economic as well as their health system. The government has also failed to fulfill the demand and compensation as assured during the time of displacement. The new settlement is lacking basic social infrastructure for a healthy living with no income option. Besides, some stony and barren land was given for cultivation, which of course was developed by them with vast amount of labour and expenditure but not up to the mark for better yielding.
