Assistant Professor,
It has been increasingly difficult to effectively respond to the growing and diversified needs of the vast majority of populations at grass-root levels. This has necessitated the emergence of institutions, which may function as a catalyst between the government and the community, yet remaining independent from direct government intervention. Such institutions in today's world are universally known as non-governmental organisations or NGOs. This paper provides a nutshell of why NGOs were formed in the first place, their relevance today, their classification and typologies in the present world and their work methodology. Besides, this paper also provides a historical background of the NGOs in India
