The Comparison of Curriculum Technical (Traditional) and Tactical Approaches for Instruction of Games and Sports

(TGFU) Approach or “Teaching Games for Understanding” Model is a game-based high level and pedagogical model, which is aimed at generating greater understanding of all aspects of games, while increasing physical activity levels, involvement, motivation and enjoyment in physical education process. There are four categories of games within the TGFU model: Target (curling, bowling), Striking/Fielding/Run-Scoring (cricket, baseball), Net/Wall (volleyball, tennis) and Controlling/Invasion/Territorial (soccer, basketball). The TGFU model suggests an alternative approach to teaching physical education and coaching. TGFU is a holistic pedagogical approach that places students in a game situation where the tactics, decision-making and problem solving are critical. These games of small sided or full sided types or games for outcomes provide opportunities for the students to develop greater understanding of all aspects of the game by actually playing. The aim of this article is to introduce TGFU and compare the characteristics of this (tactical) model to traditional (technical) model for training the scholar, competent and interest athletes, explain the phases of effective teaching of various games and sports to teachers and coaches and planners of physical education area.
