The development of India's power sector (specifically power generation) is an important area of focus in the coming years. The objective of this is paper is to highlight the significance of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) function in power generation plants based on Ownership types, the relative competitive advantage of each of these ownership pattern, critical success factors, opportunities and challenges of O&M for various ownership types
This viewpoint paper uses Qualitative research and the study is an Ex Post Facto descriptive research. The sampling is based on “non-probability sampling” specifically Snowball samples. There were total 15 participants. Primary information was collected through in-depth iterative verbal interviews.
O&M is crucial in the power generation scenario. There are two ways of managing O&M and it is an important component of operating cost. The choice of O&M method has a definite impact on competitive advantage for plants of varying ownership types. Both have fair amount of challenges but create plenty of opportunities. It can be used as a strategic leverage option. It will be a defining factor in the growth and sustainability of power generation business.
Request for anonymity and reluctance to respond are main hindrances for research in the sector.
This paper is meant to understand O&M as a function, its significance and as a business proposition.
