Organic and inorganic fertiliser sources must be managed to minimize nutrient losses and protect water sources. With increasing pollution and increasing competition for water from increased urban usage of water and industrial demand for water, the net quantity of water that will become available for agriculture is bound to get reduced progressively in all the developing countries. Among various factors which affect the water lise, fertiliser application is an important one. Nutrient deficiencies and toxicities can affect WUE by altering yield, evaporation and transpiration. In irrigated agriculture, the relations between water and soil fertility are very important. Various studies have clearly pointed out the positive interaction between the nutrients and water use efficiency. So proper nutrient management is essential for optimising water use efficiency. The impact of nutrient management on water use efficiency has been studied in several crops and are reviewed here under.
