The paper describes the strategy which consists of drought evading practices and drought alleviating practices supported by long term experimental findings generated from vertisols of western parts of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Paper reviews the results on the impact of runoff harvesting and its recycling, low cost land management practices, growing suitable crops and varieties matching with water availability period, improved cropping systems, conservation of soil profile stored moisture for crop water use by vegetative and soil mulching, integrated nutrient management, and certain specific agronomic practices for improving water use efficiency by various crops grown particularly under moisture stress conditions.
