Abstract

Among the hybrid vegetable technology, hybrid development and hybrid seed production techniques are the two essential components. The credit for popularizing hybrid vegetables in India must go to private seed companies. However, it is suggested that future development of hybrid combinations should be entrusted to public sector and the commercial production of hybrid seeds should be undertaken by the private sector. Promising vegetable hybrids of public and private sectors have been enlisted. At present, hand emasculation and hand pollination is the predominant method of hybrid seed production which is the most cumbersome and expensive. The three commonly employed mechanisms to overcome hand emasculation and hand pollination and facilitate natural pollination are, dicliny, monoecism and dioecism; self incompatibility and male sterility can be utilized in various vegetable crops.
