Abstract

Pre and post harvest technologies are imperative to avoid yield losses in crops, which accounts for a major share of the harvested produce. Strategies to reduce such losses with particular reference to rice are reviewed in this paper. The technologies include harvesting at optimum stage of maturity, spraying common salt (20%) or herbicides to hasten desiccation, employing machines for harvesting, adjusting date of planting so that maturity of crops does not coincide with unfavourable weather conditions, pre-harvest spray of insecticides, plant products to prevent the carry over of storage pests and following simple traditional indigenous methods to control storage pests.
