Abstract

Boron is one of the essential micronutrient required for healthy growth of plants. Deficiency of boron is recognized as one of the most wide spread, second to zinc only. Adsorption and desorption reactions are likely to be major factors in regulating boron concentration in solution and ultimately availability to plants. Besides the concentration of boron in soil solution, boron adsorption and desorption is also influenced by soil characteristics. Boron adsortion reactions on soils are described by various adsorption equations. This paper reviews the current knowledge on boron adsorption and desorption mechanisms and outlines the factors affecting the retention and release of boron in soil.
