Insecticide resistance management in cotton - Indian scenario - A review

Abstract

Cotton crop suffers from the attack of sucking pests as well as bollworms. Insecticides have been in use indiscriminately leading to the acquisition of resistance inadvertently in insects to all groups of insecticides world wide. Helicoverpa armigera Hubner showed high degree of resistance to triazophos, cypermethrin and fenvalerate in India. Spodoptera litura Fabricius acquired resistance to endosulfan, cypermethrin, fenvalerate and monocrotophos. The need for resistance management has a positive influence on the ease of insect pest management for ensuring sustainability. IPM strategies involving all the tools such as mechanical, cultural, behavioural, host plant resistance, biological and chemical control methods are being advocated with the main intension of minimizing the ill effects of insecticides restricting the use of insecticides. It simultaneously ensures the effects of insecticides for longer period. IPM packages have been developed with certain degree of location specificity for managing the pest population and concurrently the resistance to insecticides.
