Wet seeded rice has been gradually replacing transplanted rice in more rice growing areas of the tropics. Higher fertilizer inputs may be necessary for wet seeded rice to support large plant population. Compared to transplanted rice, varieties require higher N input to produce the same yield. So, fertilizer especially nitrogen nutrition is important to achieve higher productivity in direct seeded rice culture. Considerable research efforts are being made in developing situation specific fertilizer management practices. Literature on nitrogen management in wet seeded rice which is the key subject is reviewed and presented below.
