Abstract

To understand the link between the genotype and the phenotype in humans and other organisms, scientists have devised ‘OMIC’ tools, like genomics, trasncriptomics, proteomics and the new entrant metabolomics. This paper introduces the principles of why metabolomics is a promising omic tool to identify biomarkers especially in the area of nutrition. Metabolomics allows the simultaneous characterization of biological matrices like milk and helps us have an understanding of the relation between food composition, consumption and consequences. It has to be remarked finally that to exploit the potential of metabolomics to the fullest we need better analytical tools and improved softwares.
