Toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4) is the only important pattern recognition receptor of the TLRs family that recognizes endotoxins associated with gram-negative bacterial infections. TLR4 plays a pivotal role in linking innate and adaptive immunity. Bovine mRNA of TLR4 gene was isolated by RT-PCR and was quantified by real-time PCR and in situ hybridization. Increased mRNA expression of TLR4 gene in the infected mammary gland with mastitis caused by either Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or E. coli thereby suggesting that TLR4 gene might be related with mastitis.
