Abstract

Rod row screening nursery comprising of 168 wheat strains with three checks for the reaction to rusts was sown in the first week of December, for two rabi seasons of 1996–97 and 1997–98. The nursery was artificially inoculated with rust spore suspension of brown and black rust inoculum. The year data indicated that out of 168 strains only 36 strains showed resistant reaction against brown rust (Puccinia recondita f. sp. trltici) and only one strain viz. CPAN 4079 was found resistant to black rust (P. graminis f. sp. tritici). Sixty six wheat strains exhibited susceptible reaction against brown rust and 18 strains to black rust. Among 36 entries some varieties viz. AKW 1071 (Puma), HD 2189, HD 2380 were highly resistant and from 66 entries, the varieties viz. MACS 2496, AKW 381, HI 977, Vijay and N-59, highly susceptible to brown rust.
