Variability among six isolates of Macrophomina phaseolina Goid obtained from najor rabi sorghum areas of Maharashtra and Kamataka in respect of cultural characters each isolate was distinct with one another. Growth of Sholapur isolate was much faster (13.3 mg) than Bijapur (12.9 mg) and Dharwad (8.3 mg) isolates. The reaction of different genotypes to isolates of M. phaseolina showed differential reaction on the popularly grown sorghum rabi genotypes. The variety CSV-14R recorded resistant type of reaction to Bijapur (B) and Sholapur (S) isolates. However, susceptible reaction to Dharwad (D) isolate. The varieties Swati, M35-1, CSH-13h and R5–29 showed susceptible reaction to isolate Sand B, while resistant reaction to isolate D. Irrespective of genotypes, Sholapur isolate showed more virulence. Thus, results indicate the existence of Physiological races within M phaseolina.
