Dry matter accumulation and its distribution in various plant parts in amaranthus (Amaranthus hypochondriacus)

Abstract

The changes in dry matter production and its distribution in various plant parts were studied in 6 genotypes of Amaranthus. The dry matter accumulation In leaves, stem and inflorescence showed independent behaviour over the crop growth period. The dry matter accumulation was maximum In leaves at 70 DAS, in stem at 85 DAS and In inflorescence at harvest. The decline in leaf dry matter was observed between 85 DAS to harvest. The dry matter in stem also declined from 85 DAS to harvest. The genotype IC-41997, with highest dry matter at harvest recorded high grain yield and the association between dry matter at harvest and grain yield was significant and positive, indicating the possibility of selecting high yielding genotypes based on high dry matter production in Amaranthus.
