Sulphur: Phosphorus ratio in rapeseed as affected by phosphorus and sulphur applications

Abstract

A pot culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of phosphorus and sulphur application on the S:P ratio of different plant parts of rapeseed (Brassica campestris L. var. toria) crop grown on a clay loam soil having 16.6 kg/ha Olsen's P and 18.7 kg/ha 0.15% CaCl2-extractable S. The treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four levels each of P and S (0, 12, 24, and 36 mg/kg soil). Application of P at all levels significantly increased S:P ratio in seed but decreased it in stover part. The S:P ratio of whole shoot was also significantly decreased at 12 and 24 mg P/kg soil. Application of S at 12 and 24 mglkg soil levels significantly increased S:P ratio in seed but decreased it in stover and whole shoot. The highest yield of seed stover and whole shoot was recorded at S:P ratios 1.15, 3.38 and 2.17 in the respective plant parts achievable in treatments receiving 36 mg S and 24 mg P, 24 mg Sand 12 mg P,and 36 mg S and 24 mg P/kg soil, respectively.
