Abstract

In vitro screening of five cowpea varieties using seed germination by roll towel method was carried out. They were placed in three treatments of salt solutions (3 dSm−1, 6 dSm−1, 9 dSm−1) and control distilled water. Analysis of variance revealed that differences due to genotypes, salt treatments and vigour index were highly significant. Among the genotypes CO 4 registered the highest mean vigour index and was found to be tolerant to salinity. P 152 was found to be sensitive to salinity at 9 dSm−1 since there was no germination of this variety at this level.
