Periodical correlations of various morphophysiological and yield contributing characters with grain yield (g)/plant in pearl millet {Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. br.}

Abstract

Studies on the relationship between different growth and development characters and their association with yield and yield contributing characters were conducted with twelve glmotypes during kharif 1997 season. The physiological basis for difference in gram yield amongst the high yielding and low yielding genotypes was mainly due to the variation in morphological and physiological characters along with the yield contributing characters. The morpho-physiological yield contributing characters which showed significant positive correlation with the grain yield (g) per plant were plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of total productive tillers per plant, root dry weight per plant, root shoot ratio, biomass production (g) per plant, leaf, stem, earhead and total dry matter per plant and the leaf area index. These are the most important parameters for breeding an ‘ideotype’ in pearl millet.
