Genetic component of variances and their ratios were estimated for eight characters in bread wheat in half diallel fashion. Plant height was mainly under the influence of additive genetic effects. Simple breeding methods would therefore be quite effective for the improvement of such a trait. However, for rest of the traits the prevalence of non-additive gene effects suggested that recurrent selection procedures and diallel selective mating might give fruitful results for improving the grain yield in wheat.
