Biology of pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis Linn.) as influenced by feeding of different grain pulses
Abstract
The study on biology of pulse beetle C. chinensis revealed that all the biological parameters like incubation period, larval-pupal period, total devlopmental period and adult longevity varied significantly among different grain pulses. Green gram and cowpea were found to be the most preferred host. Lowest incubation period (4.10 days) was recorded on lentil. On pea, average total developmental period and longevity of pulse beetle were higher (23.49 days and 14.83 days, respectively) while lower on green gram (17.19 days and 11.75 days, respectively) followed by cowpea (18.12 days and 11.37 days, respectively). The duration of life cycle was longer on pea (43.85 days) but was shortest significantly on green gram (33.51 days) and cowpea (34.02 days).
