A study on fertility restoration on diverse CMS sources in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
Abstract
Eight cytoplasmic male sterile lines belonging to three cytoplasmic sources viz., PET-1, CMS I and CMS PEF were crossed with eighteen inbreds to identify fertility restorer lines for each CMS line. Out of eighteen inbreds tested, thirteen were found to be restorers for both ARM 243A (PET-1) and ARM 245A (PET-1), while others behaved as maintainers. Eleven inbreds restored fertility with both ARM 238A (PET-1) and 302A (PET-1). Fifteen inbreds with IMS-IB4 (CMS I), IMS-852A (CMS I) and PF-400A (CMS PEF) were proved to be good restorers. No segregation was observed. Effective restorers identified for newly developed alternate sources of cytoplasm could be exploited in developing hybrids with better heterosis and it can pave the way for broadening the CMS sources.
