Abstract

A study on burrow pattern of lesser bandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis (Gray) was conducted in four different crop fields under mid hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh during 1999–2000. Area covered by the burrow system was maximum (7.39 m2) in wheat and minimum (4.27 m2) in paddy fields. Maximum number of surface openings (17.10), depth of the burrow (18.52 cm) and hoarded material (0.926 Kg) were observed in wheat fields as compare to paddy, pea and tomato. Minimum depth of the burrow (12.84 cm) and hoarded material (0.162 Kg) was observed in pea fields, while the surface openings of burrow was minimum (11.30) in paddy fields.
