Abstract

A field experiment was conducted on rainfed green gram (Vigna radiata L.) by using different composts obtained from the pit method of composting pearl millet straw at the rate of 12.5 tonnes ha−1 at Regional Research Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Aruppukottai. Even though, the fertilizer applied was only 50% of the recommended dose for the compost applied treatments, the compost prepared by the mixed microbial inoculumrecorded 11.4% higher yield (772 kg ha−1) than the treatment not applied with compost (693kg ha−1). This may be due to the presence of higher functional root nodules of 25.6 plant−1.
