Online published on 4 October, 2013.

Abstract

Quality of underground irrigation water in Central alluvial Region of the Punjab has been studied on the basis of 275 water samples collected from 11 districts which coverS 54 blocks and 104 villages in such a way that almost whole of the region was covered. On the basis of electrical conductivity 96, 3 and 1 per cent samples fall in the category of < 2000, 2000–4000 and > 4000 μmhos cm−1, respectively. Whereas on the basis of residual sodium carbonate 70.9, 19.7 and 9.5 per cent samples fall in the category of < 2.5, 2.5–5.0, > 5.0 me L−1, respectively. Taking into consideration both electrical conductivity and residual sodium carbonate 70.9, 19.7 and 9.5 per cent water samples were found to be fit, marginal and unfit, respectively for irrigation purposes
