A total of 14 genotypes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis using polymerase chain reaction with ten arbitrary decamer oligonucleotide primers. Rice genotypes studied in current investigation include three traditional basmati gentypes, six evolved basmati varieties, and five varieties of non basmati rice. The percentage of polymorphic bands ranged from 71% to 100% with an average of 89% polymorphism. Fairly high genetic diversity was recorded through jaccard's similarity matrix, the genetic similarity coefficient (GS) values based on RAPDs for all the possible pairs of genotypes ranged from 0.02 (Haryana Basmati-1 and Narendra Usar-3) to 1.000 (Ranbir Basmati and Type -3). It was observed that genetic diversity is lower among the traditional basmati genotypes whereas the evolved basmati varieties showed the higher genetic diversity.
