Partition, one of the most tragic events in the history of the subcontinent, traumatized people deeply and left an indelible mark on their collective psyche. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in arson, looting, and the wave of violence that preceded and followed the Partition, leading to disorienting displacement. There was a colossal loss of human life, property and assets, and people were forced to abandon their homes and leave behind their loved ones, a decision that would torment them for their whole lives thereafter. The tragic saga of Partition has been recounted in all its horror through various media, most creatively through literature and cinema. Innumerable novels, poems, short stories, films and songs have given voice to the angst that seared the collective consciousness of the nation. This paper is an attempt to highlight the creative response of writers and filmmakers through novels such as “Tamas”, “Train to Pakistan” and “Basti”, and films such as “Garam Hava” and “Pinjar” to the pervasive mood of hopelessness that had vitiated the emotional landscape of a whole generation. These works bring alive the harrowing reality of the catastrophic period that shook the subcontinent and left millions of people emotionally scarred, physically exhausted and financially ruined.
