Abstract

Diabetes mellitus and stomach/duodenal infections are major pathological conditions related to the activity of α-amylase and urease enzymes. Inhibition or alteration of these enzymes with plant-based products can produce immediate and specific effects with low toxicity. The present study aims to investigatethe inhibitory effect of acetone, methanol and water extracts of P. cerasoides onalpha-amylase and urease enzymes. Results revealed that all three extracts were potent α-amylase and urease inhibitors. However, acetone extract exhibited the highest inhibitory potential with IC50 values of 84.42(μg/mL against α-amylase and methanol extract was most effective with IC50 of 99.07(μg/mL against urease enzyme. This study suggests that P.cerasoides possess therapeutic potential against diabetes mellitus and gastrointestinal ailments.
