Japanese-Canadian Literature can be interpreted as an ongoing construction of identity at numerous levels: individual, collective, political, cultural and generational. Japanese-Canadian authors have grappled with major issues of their times and in the process have examined the boundaries of ethnicity and nationality, often arising at increasingly complex definitions of Japanese-Canadian identity. Their identity is complex as they consider themselves as Japanese-Canadians whereas the government rejects their claim of being Canadians.
