Ecotourism leads to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs to be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems. In this study butterflies were used in assessing biodiversity restoration and ecotourism at Thana Plaun Hydroelectric Project area. The Butterflies were used as indicator species because of their high sensitivity in ecosystems alteration. The study was done in three different areas, namely the dam site, diversion site and power house sites. Butterfly sweep nets and Butterfly traps baits were used for them. Besides, monitoring was also an indicator about the trend being followed by insect groups as a whole. Biodiversity index of butterfly species has been updated from different hydroelectric project sites. The statistical data of seasonal abundance and diversity index of butterfly species have been discussed. The diversity of Butterflies was highest at the dam site during post monsoon season and the lowest during the pre monsoon at the diversion site. In this study butterflies were used in assessing the hydroelectric project site recommended for aesthetic, education and travel purposes to natural areas that helps conserve the environment and improves the well-being of local people.
