The purpose of the study was to analyse the effects of twin block myofunctional appliance and Forsus appliance on the mandible with Finite Element method, which is a 3-dimensional (3D) finite element stress analysis.
Five 3 Dimensional Models of the mandibles were constructed from the images generated from CBCT, of patients undergoing removable and fixed functional appliance treatment. The output was analysed with the FEM, and highest Von Mises stress and maximum Principal stress regions were evaluated.
Model of the mandible with Fixed Functional appliance (Forsus) showed more areas of stress as seen with the model of mandible with Twin Block (Removable functional appliance).
Fixed Functional appliance as studied by FEM causes increase in the von Mises stress and Maximum Principal Stress in both parts of the mandible i.e. the condylar region and cortical bone by more than 2 times.
