It would be correct to believe that the existence or non existence of malocclusion is an adult individual’s perceptive. Thereby the choice of going for orthodontic treatment is elective. It has been observed that the average life expectancy has been increased in recent years and thereby more middle aged or adult patients are seeking orthodontic treatment. It is mandatory to understand the various factors associated with adult orthodontics, as well as adult attitudes and perception towards orthodontic treatment as this allows better assessment of requirements of adults before and during orthodontic treatment.
To evaluate adult attitudes and perception of orthodontic treatment, to study the patient awareness of dental problems, effects of malocclusion in social life, emotional well being and esthetics etc, among male and female patients ( 25-35 years ) as majority of orthodontic patients fall under this category, To determine the severity of the above problems of the patients with malocclusion, To find out the priority based factor which affects the patient attitude towards orthodontic treatment.
A sample of 300 adult patients aged between 25-40 years with some kind of malocclusion present was surveyed by filling a detailed questionnaire divided into two components psychological components selected malocclusion and orthodontic treatment and the functional components related to malocclusion and orthodontic treatment. The sample consisted of central Indian population ( Mainly from district Bhopal ) which consisted of both male and female adults ( 25-40 years ) with the main intention to focus on reason of seeking or not seeking orthodontic treatment by adults or middle aged people statistical test were used to confirm the significance of results.
Esthetic factor from the psychological component was highest in males ( 81.2%) whereas emotional factor from the psychological component was highest in females ( 85.7% ). The functional component was only 68.3% and 65.2 % in males. Comparison with age and sex females is more interested in orthodontic treatment.
In psychological component of malocclusion , loss of confidence, improper position of teeth, and embarrassed while interacting socially, awareness of orthodontic treatment for the placement of artificial teeth, these are the common factors for seeking orthodontic treatment. Whereas smile satisfaction, braces are unesthetic, less knowledge about orthodontic treatment these factors for not seeking orthodontic treatment In functional component, incompetent lips, clicking sound and pain in tmj , these factors for seeking orthodontic treatment.
