This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between a proposed linear skeletal distance measured from Nasion to Sella and occlusal vertical dimension measured from the anterior nasal spine (ANS) to inferior border of the chin (Menton; Me) on cephalometric radiographs.
A total of 30 digital cephalometric radiographs were collected in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format (15 male, 15 female) from the archives of the Command Military Dental Centre,Pune. The distance from Nasion (Na) to Sella (Se) and the distance from anterior nasal spine (ANS) to Menton (Me) were measured on the cephalometric radiographs, using J v 1.51 software. The data were compared statistically using the Pearson correlation coefficient, regression analysis, and paired-t and 1-sample t tests (α=.05).
The findings of the study revealed a significant positive correlation (P<.001) between the measured distances in male and female with minimum difference between the variables.
The distance from Nasion (Na) to Sella (Se) can be used as an additional aid for determination of the occlusal vertical dimension in both, male and female for the study population.
