Abstract

Facial esthetics plays an essential role in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. In different growth patterns, the relation of the hard tissue to soft tissue growth direction is essential. Detailed analysis of soft tissue characteristics, involving the ratio of the soft tissue changes with the change in hard tissue is also crucial to predicting the outcome of surgical treatment. The vertical dimensions of hard tissues affect the soft tissue thickness in anteroposterior and vertical planes. This study was carried out to correlate the relation between Soft Tissue Thickness at Chin (STC) and vertical divergence.

To evaluate the soft tissues thickness at chin (STC) in patients with varying growth patterns.

Patients seeking orthodontic treatment (n=80), with age group between (13-26yrs), were divided in four subgroups based on anterior cranial base to mandibular plane inclination (SN/MP): low SN/MP < 27° (n= 15); medium-low, 27°< SN/MP < 32° (n= 27 ); medium-high SN/MP ≤ 37° (n = 14); and high SN/MP ≤ 37°(n = 24). Group differences were calculated with ANOVA test and one-way analysis.

The STC values were smaller in patients with 32°< SN/MP ≤ 37°at pog (11.0417 ±2.5mm) than at Gn (mean values 7.1667±2.01 mm) and at Me (6.0000±1.956 mm).

Hard tissues of mandible modify the Soft tissues thickness of chin in different vertical divergences. The STC is thinner in Hyperdivergent facial patterns.
