Prevalence of stress among dental students in final year at genesis Dental College, Ferozepur (BFHUS) Punjab

Abstract

Stress and its psychological manifestations are inherent in human life and are a major source of concern in the modern day society. Dental education in final year poses many new, challenging and potentially threatening situational demands for the students throughout the world. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and the factors associated with stress amongst dental student in final year at genesis dental college, Ferozpur, Punjab. A sample of 104 undergraduate was taken for study from academic session 2018 -2019. A validated dental Students’ Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was used to collect the data. Stress and its six factors (Academic related stressor (ARS), Teaching related stressor (TRS), Health related stressor (HRS), Personal life related stressor (PLRS), financially related stressor (FRS), Social media related stressor (SMRS), were analysed.

Family related stress amongst male (41%) and personal life related stress amongst female (28%) are the top stressful factor which may affect their academic performance.

Dental students are highly resourceful to manage their stress well and thus denying the negative effect of stress towards their academic performance. Dental schools should train students exposing various personal and professional developmental activities that able to face the everyday challenges and manage stress well and thereby achieve better academic performance.
