The present study compared effect of different mouthwashes on orthodontic brackets.
The present study was conducted on 30 pieces stainless steel brackets were randomly assigned into 3 groups. The samples were immersed in group I (Chlorhexidine 0.12%), group II (Hydrogen peroxide 0.12%) and group III (Persica) mouth washes for 30 min, 1.5 h and 1.5 h, respectively. Surface topography changes and the number of corrosion holes were characterized via a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The mean corrosion percentage in group I was 5.37%, in group II was 3.32% and in group III was 3.04%. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). The mean number of holes in group I was 5.12, in group II was 4.38 and in group III was 4.01. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).
Authors found that corrosion resistance and number of holes were maximum with chlorhexidine mouth wash as compared to hydrogen peroxide and persica mouth wash.
