A new method in treating the open apex at the apical end

Abstract

Various treatment modalities are available in literature for the management of open apices. The major concern in open apex cases is need of apical barrier against which one can obturate the canal. Conventional treatment options require long time and multi visit approach that may reinfect the canal and may impair apical healing. Recent materials like MTA, Biodentine have the benefit of One step apexification wherein the root canal can be obturated within 24 hours after placement of MTA. Matrix placement prior to MTA or biodentin avoids the extrusion into periapical area, reduces leakage and allows favourable response of periapical tissues. This report presents a case of management of open apex where an absorbable suture was used as an apical matrix. Absorbable suture evades the various factors like time limitation, cost factor associated with convententional materials. Absorbable sutures used as apical matrix are easy to place with the help of preselected pluggers. One year follow-up of the case shows bone healing in the periapical region. The patient was asymptomatic during the whole follow-up period and tooth was functioning normally.
