A study to compare and evaluate the efficacy of intra-pocket application of 2 antimicrobial agents as an adjunct to mechanotherapy of chronic generalized periodontitis

Abstract

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is an effective means of treating and controlling periodontal disease; however the ability of clinician to gain access to deep pockets often results in a substantial variation in its effectiveness. Therefore to compensate the technical limitations and to prevent early microbial recolonization, the adjunctive use of antimicrobials agents may be indicated to ensure the best chance of clinical improvements.

Evaluation of the efficacy of 2 commercially available drugs-Chlorhexidine Gluconate gel (HEXIGEL®) and Curcuma gel (CURENEXT®) as an adjunct to SRP in treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis.

Twenty patients of chronic generalized periodontitis with pocket depth of 4-6 mm were divided into 2 groups using a split-mouth design. In each patient, after SRP, two contra-lateral sites in two different quadrants were randomly divided into Group 1: Receiving 1% chlorhexidine gluconate gel and in Group 2: Receiving 1% Curcumin gel. Clinical parameters like Plaque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), Sulcus Bleeding index (SBI), Probing Pocket depth (PPD), and Clinical attachment levels (CAL) were determined at baseline and 4 weeks post treatment.

It can be concluded that both chlorhexidine gluconate and Curcumin gel can be used as an adjunct to SRP.
