Assessment of morphological changes in collagen fibers in various histological grades of OSCC using various stains

Abstract

Formation of a clinically relevant tumor requires the support of the surrounding normal stroma, referred to as the tumor microenvironment (TME). The present study was conducted to assess morphological changes in collagen fibers in various histological grades of OSCC using various stains.

80 tissue samples were divided into 4 groups. Group I consisted of 20 cases of histologically proven well differentiated OSCC, group II were 20 cases of moderately differentiated OSCC, group III were 20 cases of poorly differentiated OSCC and group IV consisted of 20 cases of normal mucosa as controls.

Group I showed orange red color in 13, yellow green in 5 and green yellow in 2, group II had 7, 11 and 2, group III had 0, 0 and 14 and group IV had 12, 6 and 2 orange red color, yellow green and green yellow color respectively. The nature of birefringence observed strongly seen in 18 and weak in 2 in group I, 15 and 5 in group II, 6 and 14 in group III and 19 and 1 in group IV as strong and weak respectively. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).

As cancer progress, the stromal change enhances movement of the tumor cells within it resulting into metastasis.
