The aim of present study was to compare conventional titanium miniplate and titanium mesh fixation in the management of mandibular fractures.
A randomized clinical trial was carried out in which 20 patients were randomly assigned to receive 2.0 mm titanium mesh (group A) or 2.0 mm conventional miniplate (group B) for fixation of fractures. All patients were followed for 12 weeks postoperatively.
14 fracture sites were treated with the titanium mesh and 14 sites with titanium miniplate. All patients achieved normal occlusion postoperatively. Intergroup neurosensory status evaluation revealed statistically no significant difference in the progression of subjective neurosensory recovery. Precise anatomic reduction was achieved in 50% patients of group A and 70% patients of group B. Postoperative complications occurred in 4 out of 20 patients.
Titanium mesh can be used as effectively as titanium miniplates in osteosynthesis of mandibular fractures with added advantage of 3-dimensional stability.
