Extracted human teeth are routinely used for preclinical and in-vitro studies. Nowadays its clinical use as biological restoration has also come up. This necessitates making them pathogen free before its usage without hampering its physical properties.
To evaluate the effect of autoclaving on physical properties of extracted human primary teeth.
Hundred freshly extracted primary teeth were collected. Then these samples were randomly categorized into following two groups of 50 each to check the following parameters - Enamel Hardness and Enamel solubility.
Thorough cleaning, scaling and pulp extirpation was done. Samples were then prepared to check enamel hardness under Knoop indenter. Enamel solubility was checked by calcium and phosphorous solubility which was determined by Roche automated clinical chemical analyzer.
Mean of all the readings were taken and it was found that there was significant reduction in enamel hardness and increase in the solubility of calcium and phosphorous of enamel after autoclaving extracted teeth.
Teeth to be used as biological restorations and research purposes required their physical properties to be unaltered by sterilization technique used. Results of the present study concluded that though autoclaving till date was considered to be cost effective and reliable method for sterilization of extracted teeth, but it failed to maintain the physical properties of teeth.
