Tobacco is the foremost preventable cause of death and disease in the world today.India happens to be the second largest consumer of tobacco (after China).Although, the Indian government is working towards the prevention of tobacco abuse. India is at present at second stage of tobacco (epidemic) whereby the percentage of smokers as well as the deaths due to smoking are on the rise. Therefore the treatment offered to smokers and tobacco consumers must be expanded and improved. In this regard dental students play a crucial role.
1- To examine training in tobacco and smoking cessation treatment and awareness of tobacco cessation service available to smokers in India among dental students and dental professionals. 2-Determine their attitudes towards TTD. 3-Measure what action, if any, they take towards TTD. 4-Identify any barriers they might face in recommending tobacco dependence treatment.
We used internet based, cross sectional online survey to measure beliefs and behaviours of 168 dental professionals and dental students from various colleges of Punjab using google forms. It included items on personal tobacco use, training and awareness of tobacco/smoking cessation treatments and services.
It is seen that the awareness regarding the practices of cessation of tobacco smoking is poor amongst the dental students and dental professionals.
There is greater need for specific training to help patients to quit tobacco.
