Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as "the condition that develops when the retrograde passage of gastric contents causes troublesome symptoms and/or complications that result in an impairment of the quality of life of these patients”. The typical symptoms include heartburn with or without acid regurgitation. Acid reflux at the level of the oral cavity, can cause the dissolution of the tooth enamel, especially at the level of the palatal and lingual surfaces of the teeth Aims & Objectives: This study aimed to document the awareness and prevalence of oral manifestation of GERD in population of Ludhiana having gastric problems with or without systemic disease. To determine the awareness and prevalence of oral manifestation of GERD in populace of Ludhiana. Materials and Method – study was carried out on 700 subjects from Ludhiana city over a period of 2 months. A KAP survey was used to assess the subject awareness and attitudes about oral manifestation of GERD. The data was compiled tabulated and was statically analysed using z-test for association with different variable. RESULTS- Female predisposition is more as compared to males, mean age group is 15–30 yrs. Most common associated features were nausea, vomiting and chest discomfort. Major etiological factors are diet and alcohol. Oral manifestation –burning sensation (19.42%), discoloration(46.99%), altered taste sensation (42.52%). Xerostomia was experienced by 24%, hyper salivation by 7%, while others saliva quantity was within normal limit. Sensitivity by cold was felt by 27% and to cold was 5%. Non cavitated lesions were seen 16% erosions, 12% attrition and 18% abrasions. Most common affected teeth were maxillary anterior palatal surfaces. In 65% mucosal ulceration on tongue and floor of mouth, 17% mucosal ulceration on tongue & 17% ulcerations at floor of mouth. CONCLUSION – The association of dental lesions and GERD is stronger than generally perceived by people and even the physicians.
