Abstract

The diseases of temporomandibular joint present as constellation of signs and symptoms and are considered the most frequent reason for chronic orofacial disorders. Understanding the functional anatomy of the temporomandibular joint is very important as some cases respond well to traditional conservative therapies while in others a surgical approach is needed. A wide variety of methods of temporomandibular joint reconstruction have been described in literature. Autogenous reconstructions such as costochondral or sternoclavicular joint graft continue to be the best option in children, whereas in adults alloplastic reconstruction is considered a safe and predictable option. The purpose of this article is to review and summarize various treatment modalities used in temporomandibular joint reconstruction.
