Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of developmental anomalies of teeth in patients undergoing Orthodontic treatment at the Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha dental college, Ludhiana (Punjab) and to find out the most frequently occurring anomaly.

This was a descriptive study in which the data was collected using pre-treatment Panoramic Radiographs of Orthodontic patients who came for orthodontic treatment in the dental college and a total of 500 patients who fulfilled our selection criteria were included in this study. On the pretreatment panoramic radiographs, following dental anomalies were noted: agenesis, supernumerary teeth, dilacerations, microdontia, impacted teeth.

Out of 500 patients, developmental anomalies were seen in 71 (14.2%) patients. Agenesis was the most common finding occurring in 27(5.4%) patients with mandibular 3rd molar, the most common tooth followed by maxillary 3rd molar and mandibular 2nd premolar. Impacted teeth was observed in 18 (3.6%) patients, microdontia in 12 (2.4%) patients, supernumerary in 8 (1.6%) patients and dilacerations in 6 (1.2%) patients.

It was observed that about 14% of patients showed at least one dental anomaly. Agenesis was the most common anomaly while Dilaceration was the least frequently seen anomaly.
