Oral submucous fibrosis is a relatively common premalignant condition of the oral cavity which may at times show pharyngeal involvement. The condition shows a strong association with the habitual consumption of betel nut and deficiency of Vitamin A, B -complex deficiency, defective iron metabolism and consumption of green chilies. It is a chronic insidious condition arising over 2–5 years and has a strong female predilection. It is characterized by mucosal blanching, burning sensation, reduced mouth opening, and vesiculation of the oral mucosa. It is a common entity in Southeast Asian populations. Malignant transformation is relatively rare and is observed in 1.5% of the patients having OSMF.
This article aims to highlight the rarity of the condition in pediatric patients. Here we report a case of OSMF in a male patient of eight years of age with no history of betel nut consumption or any related dermatological conditions.
