Oral cancer most commonly occurs in middle-aged and older individuals, although a disturbing number of these malignancies is also being documented in younger adults in recent years. The present study was conducted to assess level of salivary gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase in oral squamous cell carcinoma and precancerous lesions.
60 subjects of both genders were selected. Patients were divided into 3 groups of 20 each. Group I were healthy subjects, group II were having premalignant lesions and conditions and group III had oral squamous cell carcinoma. The estimation of GGT was done.
There were 12 males and 8 females in group I, 11 males and 9 females in group II and 13 males and 7 females in group III. PMDs were leukoplakia in 8, erythroplakia in 2 and OSMF in 10. The mean GGT level in group I was 16.4 U/L in group I, 50.2 U/L in group II and 72.5 U/L in group III. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).
The level of GGT was higher among oral squamous cell patients as compared to healthy subjects, hence salivary gamma-glutamyl transferase activity can be used effectively as a tumor markers.
